One of the questions we get the most at Seminole County Area Rowing is:
“Which camp should I sign up for?”
And honestly, the answer depends on what kind of experience you want this summer.
Some athletes are stepping into a boat for the very first time. Others already know how to row and want to get faster, stronger, and more competitive before fall season begins. That’s exactly why we offer both learn2row and competitive camps — because every athlete starts somewhere different.
Beginner Camps: Learn the Sport & Have Fun
Our beginner camps are designed for middle and high school students who are brand new to rowing. No experience? No problem. Seriously.
We teach everything from the ground up:
How to safely get in and out of a boat
Basic rowing technique
Teamwork and communication
Water safety
Confidence on the water
The biggest thing we notice with new rowers is how quickly they improve. A lot of athletes come in nervous during the first day and leave camp rowing with teammates, making friends, and asking when they can come back.
These camps are perfect for students who:
Want to try a new sport
Need a break from screens and video games
Love being outside
Want to build confidence
Are looking for a team environment and new friendships
Rowing is unique because you don’t need years of experience to start. We’ve seen athletes discover rowing for the first time and quickly realize they found their sport.
Competitive Camps: Take Your Rowing to the Next Level
Our competitive rowing summer camps are built for experienced rowers who already understand the basics and want to improve performance.
These sessions are more intense and focused. Athletes spend time working on:
Advanced technique
Conditioning and endurance
Race strategy
Boat speed
Mental toughness
Sculling skills
Competitive preparation for fall racing
Competitive camps move at a faster pace and challenge athletes both physically and mentally. They’re designed for rowers who want extra water time, individualized coaching, and a competitive environment surrounded by other motivated athletes.
Head Coach Michelle Hill brings decades of coaching experience to these sessions, helping athletes sharpen technique while preparing for state, regional, and national-level competition.
For experienced athletes, summer can be the difference between staying the same and making huge improvements before the season starts.
So… Which Camp Is Right for You?
Here’s the simplest way to think about it:
Beginner Camp is for you if:
You’ve never rowed before
You want to learn the basics
You’re looking for a fun and supportive introduction to the sport
You want to meet new friends and try something different
Competitive Camp is for you if:
You already have rowing experience
You want to improve your racing and technique
You’re preparing for varsity or championship-level competition
You want challenging training and coaching
And if you’re still unsure — that’s okay too. We’re always happy to help athletes and families figure out the best fit.
At the end of the day, both camps are about growth. Whether you’re learning your first stroke or chasing faster race times, summer rowing builds confidence, discipline, friendships, and memories that last long after camp ends.
The hardest part is usually just showing up that first day. After that, the water tends to do the rest.
