Didn’t Make the Team? Your Next Sport Might Be Waiting on the Water

Tryouts didn’t go the way you hoped?

Maybe you didn’t make the team. Maybe you were told there wasn’t a spot for you. Or maybe you’re tired of sitting on the bench waiting for your chance to play.

Don’t let one team decide whether you’re an athlete.

At Seminole County Area Rowing (SCAR), we’re always looking for athletes who are ready to work, learn, and be part of a team—and you don’t need any rowing experience to start.

You Don’t Have to Know How to Row

Seriously. Most new rowers don’t.

We’ll teach you how to row, how to use the equipment, and how to work together with your crew. What you bring is your willingness to learn and put in the effort.

If you’ve played another sport, many of the skills you already have can transfer to rowing: strength, endurance, coordination, competitiveness, discipline, and the ability to be coached.

And if you’ve never considered yourself an athlete? Rowing might surprise you.

Get Off the Bench and Into the Boat

One of the best things about rowing is that there are different ways to contribute.

Rowers come in different heights, builds, personalities, and athletic backgrounds. There are also opportunities to learn different boats, seats, sculling, sweep rowing, and coxing.

At SCAR, your progress comes down to what you do with the opportunity.

Show up. Work hard. Get stronger. Earn your seat.

Find Your Crew

Not making a team can feel like a door closing. Sometimes, though, it just points you toward a sport you never thought to try.

Rowing gives you the chance to build strength and endurance, compete at regattas, make new friends, challenge yourself, and become part of a team where everyone in the boat has a job to do.

For athletes who want to continue after high school, rowing can also open the door to college rowing and recruitment opportunities.

You may have been cut from one roster.

That doesn’t mean you’re done competing.

Your Season Can Start Here

SCAR welcomes middle and high school students in grades 6–12 throughout Central Florida, including complete beginners.

You don’t need years of experience.

You don’t need to have rowed before.

You just need to be willing to try something new.

Didn’t make the team? Come find your crew.
